It's no conventional Internet portal. It's a City portal. An Internet hub for an entire city, for all its population, companies, associations, societies and organisations. MalarNetCity is quite simply Västerås on the Net.
Background
The MalarNetCity vision was born back in 2000, when the first connections to Västerås’s fast CityNet were put in place. It was all part of the vision for a fast local fibre network for all of Västerås. A network that would link together every building in the town in a MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) for all sorts of digital communication. Where traffic within the town could be routed locally and with swift access to the Internet.

CityNet was built and operated by energy provider Mälarenergi’s subsidiary company Mälarenergi Stadsnät. Today more than half the population of Västerås has access to CityNet, including 7000 fibre-linked villas.
Within a few years, approximately 90% of Västerås is expected to be hooked up.

Västerås in short
Dynamic midsized city in Sweden, in the expansive Mälarregionen. The roots goes way back to the vikings and Västerås was early a trading and shipping port. Later on a part of the heavy metal traditions and pioneers in mechanical and electrical industry. The Swedish company ASEA (now known as ABB) was founded in Västerås and gave growth to the city. Today Västerås is highly networked with focus on hightech, trade and shopping, business meetings, know-how and living quality. We are 135,000 inhabitants in Västerås, 100 km west from Stockholm.
